Are you tired of entering text into your Kenwood D700 by turning the panel knob until the right letter appears and then hitting the -> key? Tired of entering text by repeatedly pushing the buttons on the microphone? Did you know it takes 18 pushes of the # key on the microphone to enter an '@' sign in someone's email address? Here's the solution to your problem. Insert this device in the line between your micrrophone and the microphone jack on the radio, plug any standard PS/2 PC keyboard into it, and simply type your text into the radio. As you type, the text will appear on the radio's screen just as it does when you enter text using the tuning knob or microphone.

Sending messages with this device is simple. Pressing the F2 key on your keyboard will take you directly to the message entry screen. Type in the callsign of the station the message is going to and hit the keyboard return key. Then type the message. Hit the keyboard return key to send or the escape key to abort sending. Note that you never have to even touch the radio in order to send an APRS message. If you find yourself sending the same text over and over again, you can record it into one of four non-volatile memory slots, each of which can hold up to 31 characters.

But wait! There's more. You can also review the list of heard stations by hitting the F3 key. Scroll up and down through the list using the cursor keys on your keyboard. Hitting the keyboard return key will display the details about any station. The same actions can be performed on the message list stored in the radio by pushing the F4 key. You may never need to touch the front panel of the radio again.

The device is offered as an easy to build kit. The kit includes all parts, including the PC board, all electronic parts, the custom made steel enclosure, and all hardware. It is powered by an internal 9 volt battery and automatically powers down completely after a few minutes of inactivity from the keyboard. To use the kit you will need to supply a standard CAT5 network patch cable (straight through) with RJ45 connectors on both ends. This is a standard sort of networking cable that would be used to connect a NIC card to an Ethernet jack.
